A tax desk will not accept “the checkout went green”. They will ask which VAT number, which VIES company name, which street, on which order. That is Shopify VIES logs tax exemption — an audit trail, not a tax-exempt checkbox. Checked 8 November 2026: OO ‑ B2B & Wholesale listing, docs General Settings and Standard Checkout Logic, Shopify Help EU taxes. If Starter drops the “VIES + logs” bullet, or the app stops writing the VIES address onto the order, reread this before you tell an auditor you have evidence.
We already covered VIES VAT number validation. This post is what you can still open in March.
Shopify Help (8 Nov 2026): you register and you file; Shopify calculates rates, it does not submit your return. Marking a customer tax-exempt is a flag. It is not an EU VIES API response. No registered company name. No “not available” when VIES omits the street.
Workarounds that fail an audit:
A checkout screenshot in Drive, unlinked from the order ID. A VAT number typed into a note by hand — typos, no VIES address, no timestamp that the number was valid *then*. A customer tag `B2B` with no reverse-charge logic. Domestic numbers can validate without exemption; docs FAQ: exemption is cross-border only. See EU reverse charge.
Listing, 8 Nov 2026, OO ‑ B2B & Wholesale: Built for Shopify, 5.0 from 34 reviews. Free: one pricing rule, one registration form — no VIES. Starter $22/month (or $220/year): unlimited pricing and forms, EU Tax exemption (VIES + logs), incl./excl. VAT display, login to see prices. Growth $37: bulk forms, RFQ, wholesale cart. 14-day trial on paid plans. USD.
Docs General Settings (Apps → B2B & Wholesale → Tax & prices → Tax Exempt → Open settings), section What gets saved:
Toggle | Lands on | Is not |
|---|---|---|
Save validated VAT ID as order note | The validated number, optional prefix | A printout from VIES.eu |
Save VIES company address data to order additional data | Company name, street, postal code, city | A complete land-registry address — missing fields become not available |
Add tag to customer after VAT validation | Default `VAT Validated` (rename if you want) | Exemption by itself; see tag tax-exempt orders |
Cart attributes `tax_exempted` / `vat_number` | Keys for an ERP | Something to rename unless the ERP demands it |
Sources: General Settings (~26 days since last update); listing 8 Nov 2026. The listing says “logs”. The docs describe fields written onto the order. I will not invent a logs dashboard that is not in those articles. The order *is* the log.

VIES is incomplete more often than merchants expect. The docs say missing fields are stored as “not available”. That string is useful. An empty field looks like you never called VIES.
Store in DE, buyer in FR, order #4408, reverse charge. Without the app: tax-exempt flag, nothing from VIES on the order. In spring the Finanzamt asks for the November validation.
On Starter, 8 Nov 2026 I would:
Turn both save toggles on. Leave the `VAT Validated` tag. Hide the form for same-country visitors so a German VAT number is not treated as exempt. Force the validation email to match checkout email — otherwise exemption never applies, log or not. Decide incl. vs excl. VAT *before* draft-order logic; that choice is prices including and excluding VAT, not the log. Docs: do not combine draft-order logic with B2B draft checkout for volume/bulk prices.
After checkout I want three things on #4408: VAT ID in the note, VIES name (or “not available”) in additional data, customer tag. Miss one and “we use VIES” is a sentence without a file.
Free cannot do this. Tax-exempt checkout without a log is an exemption you cannot explain. Growth adds RFQ and bulk grids; the VIES trail is a Starter line.
Shopify still will not file VAT for you. Help EU taxes is unchanged.
Open the listing. Read Starter’s EU Tax exemption (VIES + logs). In the app: Tax Exempt → Open settings → What gets saved. Enable VAT ID note and VIES address. Place a test order to a *different* EU country. Open the order. If the street is missing, you should see “not available”, not a blank.
Do not disable the saves “to keep the order clean”. A clean order is exactly what an auditor cannot read. The VAT field in checkout is a different article: VAT number at B2B checkout.
For that DE→FR catalog I would buy Starter for VIES, turn both save toggles on, and only then promise live B2B checkout. Shopify VIES logs tax exemption is evidence on the order, not a Drive folder of screenshots. Native Shopify never stores the VIES payload. Listing 8 Nov 2026: VIES + logs on Starter $22, not Free. Docs write the number and the VIES address; missing address fields become “not available”. If either source moves, this recommendation is void.
Turn the saves on from the OO ‑ B2B & Wholesale listing before the next cross-border order, not during the audit.
