Shopify saved customer views: share Locale empty with the team

Yesterday you put Locale in the Columns picker. Today a teammate opens the editor on another laptop: default columns, no filter, tax exempt back in the grid. Your layout lived in that browser. Shopify saved customer views are the other mechanism: columns, filters, sort, and an optional segment under one name, for the whole shop.

The OO - Bulk Customer Data Editor listing says it outright: *save reusable views*. Docs: Save and reuse views. We already covered choosing columns — that is still the picker. This article is storing the combination so “Locale empty” or “Wholesale tax exempt check” is waiting for the team.

Browsers remember columns. Shops remember views.

Native Customers has no named view for “show Locale, filter is empty”. Shopify segments are live queries; they do not tell the editor which columns to display. The picker remembers column choice in this browser (columns, filters, and sorting). Switch machine, start over.

A view stores columns, filters, sort, and an optional segment. Storage: the whole shop, shared with your team. Not limited to one browser. Without Save as new it stays a private layout.

What teams try until everyone clicks again

Rebuild the picker every morning. Works until someone leaves tax exempt visible on a locale job. No name, no Apply, no colleague opening the same grid.

A Slack screenshot: “set it like this.” People copy. They forget `is empty`. Select-all matching (up to 50,000) then grabs the wrong set.

A Shopify segment, default columns. “Imported DE” exists. The editor opens with address columns. Locale falls off-screen. The segment is the group; the view is how you *look* at that group.

None of those is: stage the grid → Save as new “Locale empty” → Apply next week in another browser.

Save as new, Apply, Update current

OO - Bulk Customer Data Editor is Free. Listing 0.0 (0 reviews). UI in English. Excel and Google Sheets via CSV. Headline fields remain Customer Locale and tax-exemption status. Open from the dashboard or Customers → More actions → Edit in bulk. Staff need `read_customers` and `write_customers`.

Stage the job, then name it

  1. Set columns, filters, sort, and optionally a segment. Locale job: Locale column on, address off, filter Locale is empty. Tax-exempt job: tax exempt on, tags on, filter on the wholesale tag.

  2. Open Views.

  3. Type a name, Save as new.

  4. Or Update current to overwrite the active view.

Apply: open Views, click Apply on the view you want. No magic: you get the stored columns/filters/sort/segment back. Bulk apply comes after, with select-all matching up to 50,000 on *those* filters. Use Update current when the job is the same and you added one extra filter — do not overwrite `Locale empty` with a tax-exempt layout by accident.

Identity columns stay visible; you do not need to “turn them on” in the view. Read-only columns (total spent, order count, created date) can stay for sorting — you do not type in them. Rename a view when the job shifts; do not leave `Locale empty` sitting on a tax-exempt filter.

Two views, two jobs — not one “everything” layout

“Locale empty” is not “Wholesale tax exempt check”. Mix them and you bulk-apply locale onto wholesale rows or tax exempt onto guests with no tag. Use two names. Apply the right one before you pick Field/Value.

A view is not a Shopify segment. Create a segment from filters is a different path: turn filters into a living Shopify query. A view *may* include a segment; it does not replace one.

FAQ: large shops search or segment first, then filter. Empty CSV cells do not clear values on updates. Keep the tab open for large saves. Views do not change those limits; they stop you forgetting the wrong filters.

Worked week: Monday locale, Tuesday tax exempt

Weekend CSV. 900 guests, Locale blank. Wholesale tag on 80 B2B accounts, tax exempt still off.

Monday:

  1. Editor. Columns: Locale on, tax exempt off, address off.

  2. Filter Locale is empty. Optional segment “imported”.

  3. Views → Save as new → `Locale empty`.

  4. Select-all matching (under 50,000). Bulk apply Locale = English (`en`) or split by country tag. Save, tab open.

Tuesday, different laptop:

  1. Apply `Wholesale tax exempt` after you have saved it: tax exempt + tags, filter tag Wholesale, Locale off.

  2. Bulk apply tax exempt. No Locale column in view, no untagged guests in the selection — if the filter is right.

Wednesday, a colleague: Apply `Locale empty`. Same columns, same filter. No screenshot in Slack.

Get the views on the shop

  1. Install OO - Bulk Customer Data Editor (Free).

  2. Customers → More actions → Edit in bulk.

  3. Stage one job (locale or tax exempt). Save as new, a name the team will recognise.

  4. Test Apply in another browser. Shop-wide, not “my Chrome”.

  5. Bulk apply after. Select-all matching up to 50,000. No other OO app in this post.

Wrap-up

Shopify saved customer views are not a second column picker. They are the shop-wide snapshot: columns, filters, sort, optional segment, one name, Apply for the team. The picker alone lives in your browser. Native Customers has no such named views.

Save `Locale empty` in OO - Bulk Customer Data Editor and let the next import open the same grid — on every laptop.
