Shopify customer metafield column bulk edit: turn one metafield on in the Columns picker, filter empty cells, change values in the spreadsheet.

Shopify customer metafield as a column: edit the grid, not 800 profiles

Loyalty tier lives in a customer metafield. Native admin: open the profile, scroll to Metafields, Save, next. At 800 wholesale accounts that is not a column — it is an evening. Shopify customer metafield column bulk edit is the other path: switch the field on in the Columns picker so it sits next to locale and tax exempt in the grid, then change only those cells.

We already covered bulk-editing metafield values (definition first; not every type is editable) and choosing columns (locale and tax exempt up front). This article is the overlap: *one* metafield visible as a column, everything else off, then filter and Save. OO - Bulk Customer Data Editor is the listing.

Native Customers does not show a metafield column

Shopify Help on Metafields: you extend the data model. Definition first, values second. Native Customers has fixed columns. Pinned metafields appear on the profile, not as a grid across 800 rows. Shopify POS shows pinned fields only — useful on the shop floor, not bulk admin.

Do not claim Shopify’s customer CSV carries every metafield cleanly. Do claim: after import you can turn the metafield column on in this editor and inspect empty or wrong values.

The listing calls out fields Shopify’s standard editor handles poorly in bulk, including Customer Locale and tax-exemption status. Metafields sit in the same bucket: data migration, bulk edit, when they are defined on the shop. The app is Free. UI in English. Still 0 reviews. Works with Excel and Google Sheets via CSV.

What shops try until the metafield stays off-canvas

Every column on, hoping loyalty is somewhere to the right

Address line 2, consent, note, phone, ten metafields. Horizontal scroll. You edit tags because those cells are in the middle. The loyalty cell is off-screen.

One profile at a time, same metafield

Works until page two.

Export, fix the column in Sheets, re-import everything

You meant to touch loyalty and accidentally dragged notes along. In this app empty CSV cells do not clear values on update — useful when a later pass only hits this metafield. Native import is a different contract.

None of those: Columns picker → one metafield on → filter is empty → cells or bulk apply → Save.

Show the column first. Change the value second.

OO - Bulk Customer Data Editor opens a spreadsheet in admin (Customers → More actions → Edit in bulk, or from the dashboard). Edit customers in the spreadsheet lists editable groups:

  • general: name, email, phone, tags, note, locale, tax exempt

  • marketing consent (email, SMS, WhatsApp, under Shopify’s rules)

  • default address

  • Metafields: customer metafields defined in your store (and metafields already present on loaded customers)

Read-only stay total spent, order count, created date. Only changed fields go to Shopify. A failed row shows Shopify’s error. Do not claim every metafield type is editable.

Choose columns, filters, and sorting:

  1. Open the Columns picker.

  2. Show or hide fields. Some identity columns always stay visible.

  3. The choice is remembered in this browser.

Turn Locale and tax exempt on if you want them in the same sweep — those are the listing USPs. Turn on *one* metafield: `loyalty_tier`, an internal number, a debtor code. Hide the other metafields. Otherwise you are scrolling again.

Filters: field, condition (`contains`, `is`, `is empty`), value — across the whole customer list, not the page. Search (name, email, phone, tags) hits Shopify search. Other fields — some metafields, note, locale — match while results are scanned. Large shop: segment or search first, then the metafield filter. Select-all matching follows that set, up to 50,000.

Edit one cell, or apply the same value to many customers. Keep the tab open on large saves. Then save a view: shop-wide, so the next run opens the same column set — the picker alone is browser-local.

Example: empty loyalty tier after a migration

800 B2B accounts. Definition `custom.loyalty_tier` (single-line text) exists. After a store migration the column is empty. `Wholesale` tags are present.

  1. Open the editor. Columns: Locale, tax exempt, tags, loyalty_tier. Everything else off.

  2. Filter: tag contains `Wholesale`, metafield is empty (if that metafield matches during the scan; otherwise a Wholesale segment first, then empty cells by eye).

  3. Select all matching, up to 50,000. Bulk apply `silver` — or set `gold` / `silver` per row if it is not one value.

  4. Save. Leave the tab open. Spot-check a native profile.

  5. Update current view, or Save as new. Next Friday, same columns — do not rebuild the picker.

Do not mix consent into the same apply. Subscribed states need a valid opt-in. Do not “also fix locale” if you only wanted loyalty. One field per run keeps the mess down.

No definition, no consistent column. Create the metafield first in Shopify Settings → Custom data → Customers. Then it shows up in the picker.

Get the column on the grid

  1. Install OO - Bulk Customer Data Editor. Free.

  2. Check the Customer metafield definition. Unsupported types may stay read-only.

  3. Columns picker: one metafield on, locale/tax exempt as needed, noise off.

  4. Filter or segment. Select all matching. Cell or bulk apply. Save.

  5. Save a view. Different browser? Open the view; do not trust the local picker.

Support chat and docs from the dashboard. Do not claim infinite select-all (cap: 50,000).

Wrap-up

Shopify customer metafield column bulk edit is not another export. It is the same grid as locale and tax exempt: column on, the rest gone, values staged, Save. Native admin opens profiles. This editor puts the metafield on the canvas.

Turn the column on in OO - Bulk Customer Data Editor. After that you change loyalty or a debtor code in rows, not in 800 tabs.
