After a migration, 1,800 German addresses sit on an empty locale. You can filter the grid and bulk apply today. Tomorrow another batch lands, and you rebuild the same conditions. Shopify create customer segment from filters is the other path: turn locale, tag, or address filters into a Shopify segment that persists — then Edit in bulk on that set.
Yesterday was empty CSV cells on import. Two days ago: bulk-edit an existing segment. Here the segment does not exist yet. The OO - Bulk Customer Data Editor listing calls out filters, saved views, and “easily create segments.” Docs: Create a segment from filters.
Shopify segments are dynamic groups (customer segmentation). New customers who match the query join. Admin can open the segment. Setting Customer Locale (`nl`, `en`, …) or tax exempt in bulk is this app’s listing point, not the default customer index.
Filters in the editor run across the whole list (columns, filters, and sorting): field, condition (`contains`, `is`, `is empty`), value. Search (name, email, phone, tags) hits Shopify search. Locale matches while scanning. On a large shop, search or a segment first, then extra filters, before select-all matching up to 50,000. Otherwise you stage the wrong fifty thousand.
“Locale is empty” that you never save is gone next week. A segment “Locale empty + country DE” lives in Shopify and in the app.
Retype the filters every Monday. Fine until someone skips `is empty` and writes tax exempt across half of Germany. No Shopify query preview, no group you can open again after the next import.
Export CSV, filter in Sheets, “make a segment later.” Excel is not a Shopify segment. Free-text `german` is not a locale. Native import overwrites more than you meant. In this app, empty CSV cells stay unchanged on updates — useful, and still a detour if you want a living group.
Wait for Admin to ship a ready-made “locale empty” segment. You might write the query there. Native bulk edit still will not treat locale and tax exempt the way this grid does. You would have a segment and a hundred profiles left.
None of that: filters in the app → query preview → Create → grid of those members → bulk apply Locale or tax exempt.
OO - Bulk Customer Data Editor is Free (listing; 0 reviews). Spreadsheet in admin. Listing USPs: Customer Locale and tax-exemption status; filters; reusable views; segments; store-to-store migration. Excel / Google Sheets via CSV. UI in English; we still publish NL+EN.
What is Bulk Customer Editor?: work with customer segments, and create new ones from filters. Open from *Start editing* or Customers → More actions → Edit in bulk. Staff need `read_customers` and `write_customers`.
Create a segment from filters:
Open Segments in the app.
Name it (`DE locale empty`).
Add filters — docs mention tags, email, locale, or address fields.
Review the generated segment query preview.
Create.
Then open it in the bulk editor, or later under Shopify customer segments. Delete from the Segments page in the app when the query is wrong — do not delete the customers.
Segment features need Shopify segment permissions on the shop and the staff account. Restricted customer permissions may show segments unavailable. Search and bulk-edit of rows already loaded can still work. Blocked protected data: Customer access is blocked.
Edit customers in the spreadsheet: Locale is a Shopify locale dropdown, not free text. Tax exempt is yes/no-style. Read-only: total spent, order count, created date.
Apply a value to many customers: Select all matching (search + segment + filters, up to 50,000) → Field → Value → Apply to selected → review → Save. Nothing hits Shopify until the save bar. Large saves run in batches — keep the tab open. Failed row: Shopify’s error, retry the rest.
Save a view for those columns (Save and reuse views). The segment is the people; the view is the grid.
Customers came from another shop. Country DE, locale empty or `en`. Tax exempt is a separate pass.
Segments. Name `DE locale empty`.
Filters: address/country DE, Locale is empty (second pass: Locale is `en` if needed). Preview the query. Create.
Edit in bulk on that segment. Not All customers.
Columns: Locale, country. Select all matching; stay under 50,000.
Bulk apply Locale → German (`de`). Apply. Save, tab open.
Spot-check ten profiles and one notification.
The next import fills the same segment. You reopen it; you do not rebuild the filters. Extra editor filters are fine as long as select-all follows the combination.
Do not drag marketing consent into the same save. Subscribed needs a valid Shopify opt-in.
Install OO - Bulk Customer Data Editor (free).
Staff with customer and segment permissions. Empty Segments page? Fix Shopify access.
Filters that match the cleanup: locale is empty, or tax exempt is no plus tag Wholesale.
Preview, Create, Edit in bulk, bulk apply, Save with the tab open.
Failed rows: read Shopify’s error. Delete the segment if the query was wrong.
Shopify create customer segment from filters stores the query so Monday is not a rerun of the same columns. Native segments group people. This editor builds the segment from locale, tag, or address filters, then writes the listing USP fields onto that group — up to 50,000 matches, only at Save. No preview, no Create. A closed tab can kill a large save.
Create the segment in OO - Bulk Customer Data Editor and put the next import cohort on the right language without typing the filter three times.
