Shopify’s Customers index is name, email, orders. Locale and tax-exempt live one profile click deeper. After a CSV import you do not need Address line 2 on screen while 800 languages are empty. Shopify customer columns bulk editor is that choice: which fields sit in the grid for *this* job.
The spreadsheet editor is the table. Yesterday was creating a segment from filters. This post is the Columns picker in OO - Bulk Customer Data Editor: locale and tax exempt up front, clutter off, remembered in *this* browser.
Customers is one account at a time. You cannot park Locale next to Tax exempt, filter `is empty`, and stage two hundred cells before Save. Locale drives notification language. Tax exempt drives whether checkout charges tax. Tags filter; they are not a dropdown beside locale.
Shopify’s own customer CSV exports what Shopify exports. Do not claim that import fixes locale or tax exempt by itself. Do claim: after import you choose which columns you *audit*.
The listing calls out fields the default editor handles poorly in bulk, including Customer Locale and tax-exemption status. The app is Free. UI in English. Still 0 reviews on the listing. Excel and Google Sheets via CSV.
Turn every column on “so we miss nothing”. Address, consent, metafields, note, phone. Horizontal scroll. The locale dropdown is off-canvas. You edit tags because those cells are in the middle.
Export to Sheets, hide columns there, import back. Empty cells do not clear values on update (docs) — a wrong header will still overwrite email. That is not a column picker in admin.
Keep the layout in your head. A colleague opens another browser and sees defaults. Your picker lived in *your* browser, not the shop. Saved views are the other mechanism; this article stays on the picker.
None of that is: pick columns → filter empty locale → bulk apply → Save.
OO - Bulk Customer Data Editor embeds in admin. Open from Start editing or Customers → More actions → Edit in bulk. Staff need `read_customers` and `write_customers`.
Choose columns, filters, and sorting:
Open the Columns picker.
Show or hide fields. Some identity columns stay always visible.
The choice is remembered in this browser.
That last line is why Save and reuse views exists: views are shop-wide. The picker alone is your session. Switch machine, start over — unless you save a view. Views are a different post.
Edit customers in the spreadsheet lists editable fields:
General: first name, last name, email, phone, tags, note, locale, tax exempt
Marketing: email, SMS, WhatsApp consent (Shopify’s rules)
Default address
Customer metafields defined on the shop (not every type is editable)
Read-only examples: total spent, order count, created date. Keep them if you sort; you do not type in them.
Locale job: locale on, maybe tags and email. Address off. Locale is a dropdown of every locale Shopify supports; docs examples Dutch (`nl`) and English (`en`).
Tax-exempt job (wholesale-style accounts): tax exempt on, tags on, locale optional. Tax exempt is a yes/no-style control, per row or via bulk apply.
Not everything at once. One job, one set. Metafields only when that column *is* the job.
Filters: field, condition (`contains`, `is`, `is empty`), value — across the whole customer list, combined with search and segment, not just the current page. Search asks Shopify (name, email, phone, tags). Locale and note match while results are scanned. Large shops: segment or search first, then filters — FAQ.
Select all matching follows the current search, segment and filters, up to 50,000. Not only the rows on screen.
Sort: Sort menu or a column header where sorting exists, ascending or descending.
Click a cell, choose, move on. Nothing hits Shopify until the save bar. Discard drops unsaved work. Only changed fields are sent.
Apply a value to many customers: Field (Locale or tax exempt), Value, Apply to selected. Large saves: keep the tab open. A failed row is Shopify’s error; retry the rest.
CSV from the old shop. Names match. Locale blank. Tax exempt untouched.
Open the editor. Columns: locale on, tags on, tax exempt off, address off.
Filter Locale is empty. Optionally a segment if you tagged `imported`.
Spot-check the table — only this job’s columns.
Select all matching (stay under 50,000). Bulk apply Locale = English (`en`) if that is the destination default, or split by country tag.
Save. Tab open. Open one profile: notifications in English.
Tomorrow’s job, same grid: Columns, tax exempt on, locale off, filter tag `Wholesale`, bulk apply tax exempt. The browser keeps the last picker until you change it.
Install OO - Bulk Customer Data Editor (Free).
Customers → More actions → Edit in bulk.
Columns picker: locale and tax exempt on for those jobs; the rest off. Identity columns stay.
Filter `is empty` on locale, or a wholesale tag. Select-all matching up to 50,000.
Bulk apply, review, Save. Different browser? The picker is gone until you save a view.
No other OO app in this post. Select-all is not infinite.
Shopify customer columns bulk editor is not a hidden Customers screen. It is the Columns picker: locale and tax exempt in view, address noise gone, stored in this browser. Native admin has no such grid. This free app’s listing does — plus store-wide filters and bulk apply up to 50,000.
Set the columns in OO - Bulk Customer Data Editor and let the next import show only the fields you are about to fix.
