Shopify carpet price per square meter: area plus a cutting surcharge

Contract carpet, PVC plank, gym rubber: the buyer measures the room, you charge area plus a cut-and-finish fee. Anyone hunting Shopify carpet price per square meter hits the same native gap. Variants do not store a continuous width. A cutting surcharge is not another SKU — it is a number on top of square metres.

We already covered flooring by the square metre with waste: a percentage extra material, then `Math.ceil`. This piece is the other cost: a fixed cutting surcharge. Saw, bind, pack. A constant, or a checkbox. Options Price Calculator puts that sum on the product page while the customer is still there.

The generic m² pattern is in price per square meter. Here the product is floorcovering: variant rate × area + cutting, without a grid of room sizes.

Shopify will stock a thickness, not a living room

Variants are inventory combinations. Adding variants caps you at three options per product and 2048 variants. The old 100-variant ceiling is gone. The three-option ceiling is not. Range, colour and thickness already fill it. Every extra centimetre of room as a variant is a SKU you will never receive from the mill.

Theme line-item properties (`properties[Width]`) store the measurement on the line. They do not change the price. The customer types 4.20 × 6.10 and pays the flat product price. You invoice the cutting fee in a draft later.

Keep thickness and colour as real variants — those SKUs drive purchasing. Leave the area maths and the cutting fee outside that matrix.

Workarounds that stall checkout

A matrix of room sizes. Widths 3–8 m in 50 cm steps. A 3.40 m room either over-orders or bounces. Cutting never enters the price; it lives in an email.

“Box covers 2.23 m²” plus a calculator in the description. Fine until someone orders the wrong count and you still cut. The surcharge stays a sentence under the gallery.

Quote by email. Site survey in, total plus cutting back. No live total. No repeat order from the same URL.

None of that is: one product URL, SKUs for colour/thickness, a price that grows with the room and a cutting fee.

Area in the formula, cutting as a constant

Options Price Calculator is Built for Shopify (5.0, 26 reviews). Unlimited product options — the listing names Numbers, Dimensions, Checkboxes, Dropdowns — plus formulas, without extra variants. Starter $9.99/month: unlimited options, formula builder, metafields, multilingual, AI. Premium $14.99/month: + conditional logic, Font Picker, live preview, price breakdown. Free: 20 uses; always free on a Shopify Develop plan. Billed in USD. Label conditional logic and live preview as Premium.

Two number fields, e.g. `width` and `length` in metres. Pricing / Formula Examples already ships a “price per square meter” pattern:

``` product_price + (width * height) ```
That adds a base price to the area. When carpet price per square meter is the variant itself, multiply instead, the same way the quantity example does (`product_price * quantity`):
``` product_price * width * length ```

The cutting fee is example 5 on that page: setup fee plus a variable amount.

``` product_price + 25 + (width * height) ```
Join the two ideas when the variant rate is the m² and cutting is a constant:
``` product_price * width * length + 25 ```

Swap 25 for your shop’s fee. `product_price` is always the current variant. Switch 8 mm rubber to 12 mm and the rate follows. Thickness stays a Shopify variant. Room size stays a calculator field.

Want the customer to opt into cutting? Example 2: a checkbox with a numeric value, otherwise `0`.

``` product_price * width * length + cutting ```
Checked: the fee. Unchecked: area only. No “with cutting” variant.
Computed properties can hold `width * length` as “area”, then reuse it. Round last, per the formula docs. `Math.ceil`, `Math.floor`, `Math.round` live in Variables and Field Values.
Material multiplier: dropdown `material` with 1 / 1.15 / 1.4 and `product_price * width * length * material + 25`, same shape as example 3 (`product_price * material_type`).
Larger rooms at a higher rate? Premium conditional (example 7: `width > 200` → a higher factor). Do not build a SKU grid for “large” versus “small”.
Walkthrough: tile carpet, cut fee on the same line
Office tile carpet. Variant options: Quality (two ranges) and Colour (four). Real SKUs — two options, under the three-option cap. The customer enters width and length in metres. Optional checkbox “Cut to size”.
Formula, in the docs’ shape:
``` product_price * width * length + cutting ```

`cutting` is a checkbox worth `35` or `0`. Variant €29.90 per m², room 4.20 × 5.80, box checked: 4.20 × 5.80 × 29.90 + 35. The product page shows the total before Add to cart.

Link the calculator per variant. Bulk linking if every colour shares the formula. Theme app extension on the product page; selector picker for price and Add to cart, because themes differ. Do not claim it “works on every theme with no setup”.

AI-powered generation of options and formulas is Starter+. Useful for a first draft; you still test the m² sum and the fee with preview values, as the formula docs ask.

Do not claim unlimited Shopify variants, or that calculator fields replace inventory. The roll in the warehouse stays the variant. The room stays input.

Server-side price validation is part of the app: checkout follows the formula, not a rewritten theme line.

Ship it on one product

  1. Install Options Price Calculator. Built for Shopify, 5.0 (26).

  2. Keep Quality and Colour as native options (SKU). Room size stays out of the variant matrix.

  3. Two number fields: `width`, `length`. Optional checkbox `cutting` with your fee.

  4. Formula: `product_price * width * length + cutting` (or `+ 25` if cutting is always on). Preview-test.

  5. Attach the calculator to the variants. Place the theme app extension. Bind price and Add to cart with the selector picker.

  6. Place a test order: 3.10 × 4.00, checkbox on and off. Check the line, the price, the note. No extra SKU.

Waste as a percentage instead of a flat fee? That is the earlier flooring article. Both can live in one formula; start with the surcharge if that is how you cost the job.

Wrap-up

Shopify carpet price per square meter is not a room-size matrix. It is the variant rate × width × length, plus a cutting surcharge in the same formula. Native Shopify stops at three options and 2048 variants. The calculator fills in the continuous measure and the flat fee, without another SKU.

Put the sum on the product page with Options Price Calculator. The cut happens at checkout, not in your inbox.
