Style a Shopify language switcher to match your theme

German copy is in the catalog. `/de` works if you type it. The header still shows a stock selector that fights your buttons — or no selector at all. Style Shopify language switcher means one control that looks like the rest of the theme, language plus country, without a second flag row from somewhere else.

OO - Ultimate AI Translations includes that switcher on Free. Listing: $0, connect your own OpenAI-compatible AI, unlimited languages/markets/translations, language switcher. No backups, no scheduled jobs, no App AI on Free. Professional $10/month + usage; Plus $20. App AI about $0.01/unit, billed at translation cost. 0 reviews, launched 14 October 2026. Do not invent ratings.

Translation job history was the run log. This is the header control.

Publishing a locale is not a switcher

Shopify lets you add and publish languages. Without a storefront control, only people who know `/de` find German.

Manage languages: the app uses Shopify markets/locales. In Languages, enable and publish what you sell. Unpublished locales can still be selected on translation jobs so you prepare copy — shoppers will not see them in the switcher until they are published.

Set up a language switcher: shoppers change language and country on the storefront.

  1. Open Switchers.

  2. Set placement, style, and which languages or markets to show.

  3. Follow the on-screen steps for the app embed or theme block in the theme editor.

  4. Preview and confirm it appears.

Same article: publish target languages in Shopify before testing. If it is missing, check the embed on the live theme.

FAQ Language switcher is missing on the storefront: enable the app embed or theme block on the live theme; publish the languages shoppers should pick.

Listing: fully customizable language switcher, including country/currency styling in the hero copy. Do not invent extra widgets that are not in Switchers.

Header experiments that backfire

Keeping Shopify’s native language selector and the app switcher. Two controls. Pick one.

Previewing against an unpublished locale. Jobs may already fill DE. The switcher lists DE after publish. FAQ and setup tips agree.

Embed on a duplicate theme, production still dark. Fix live.

Restyling only in theme CSS while Switchers stays default. Docs put style in Switchers. Start there. Do not invent colour tokens the docs never list.

Free covers the control

Professional is backups, monthly schedule, glossary, App AI. The switcher is already on Free. You can ship NL/DE with your own API key, add glossary later, and still have a header control that matches the theme.

Editor locks keep manual saves from being overwritten by jobs. That is translation behaviour, not a switcher setting. The control changes locale; it does not translate.

Country in the same control: markets with their own currency. Listing categories mention currency conversion / country selector. In Switchers you choose languages or markets, as the docs phrase it.

Walkthrough: NL catalogue, DE live, branded header

Primary Dutch. DE published in Markets. A few metaobjects still Missing — editor work, not the button.

Dawn’s language dropdown sits next to mint buttons and looks wrong.

  1. Languages in the app: DE enabled and published. Home progress is not the switcher.

  2. Switchers: placement in the header as the screen allows, style aligned with the theme, languages NL + DE (or the DE market).

  3. Theme editor on the live theme: embed or language-switcher block, Save.

  4. Turn Dawn’s own selector off so you do not get two flags.

  5. Preview `/` and `/de`. Unpublished FR stays out of the list.

  6. Missing in production: FAQ, embed on live.

Scheduled jobs (Professional/Plus) can wait. The switcher was already Free.

What the switcher will not translate

It changes locale (and country/market). It does not fill empty product titles. Missing fields stay Missing until a job or the editor writes them. Jobs skip handles, URLs, IDs, SKUs, and short size codes — FAQ, not Switchers. Do not expect a German handle because the control sits on DE.

Primary language is the source. Home shows completeness per locale. A green DE bar is not proof the header control exists. The reverse is also fine: a polished switcher on a half-translated catalogue. Glossary and brand voice belong with the AI (glossary on Professional+ per listing). The switcher does not require them.

Draft/development themes can be translated when those content types are on a paid plan. Test the switcher on the live theme. An embed only on an unpublished duplicate is the same miss as any other app embed.

CSV/Excel in listing “Works with” is about translation content, not drawing the control. Styling stays Switchers + theme editor.

If language change should move currency too: Shopify Markets, then show markets in Switchers. Do not pitch a second currency app. Do not name competitors.

Locks: a hand-edited German title stays locked. The switcher shows that title in DE. It does not unlock fields.

Next

Publish the locale. Open Switchers. Placement, style, languages/markets. Embed or block on live. Click it as a shopper on the production URL, not only in the editor. The OO Translations listing is $0 for this control.

Wrap-up

Style Shopify language switcher is Switchers plus embed or block, after publish. Not a second flags app. Not a test against an unpublished language.

Translate in the editor (jobs later). The switcher is storefront. Put it on Free, in the look of your theme, with the languages you actually sell.
