Weighted scorecard for Shopify shipping-rule apps

Checkout shipping gets expensive when the rate depends on a postcode, a tube’s dimensions, or a customer tag. Star ratings do not answer that. This Shopify shipping rules apps weighted scorecard compares OO ‑ Shipping Rates & Rules with Intuitive Shipping and Bambri’s Advanced Shipping Rules. Listing text is from 2 November 2026.

Weights: functionality 25%, integrations 15%, reliability 15%, reviews 10%, ease of use 10%, price-to-value 10%, scale 10%, support 5%. The carrier-rate checklist is the knock-out in front of every total. A free app does not turn a Basic shop into a carrier.

Must-haves

| Must-have | Knock-out | |-----------|-----------| | Your own checkout price beyond country × weight | A shipping profile already does that | | Conditions on postcode, product, tag, or size | A free-shipping threshold is native | | A Shopify plan that may run a carrier service | Without Advanced, a development store, Plus, or a carrier that is already on, your price never returns | | Hide or rename methods that are already there, if checkout is crowded | A second app only for that is stacking | | An app price that fits the order count | “All features” inside a sandbox is not a live rate | | No invented reviews | Zero reviews is a fact, not five stars |

An AI draft, logs, and reorder are advantages. They become knock-outs only when the merchant writes them down as requirements.

The plan gate, before features

From the app article Shopify plan requirements, reread on 2 November 2026:

Your own prices through the OO - Shipping Rate & Rules carrier typically need Advanced Shopify or higher, a development or Partner development store, or Shopify Plus. If the carrier is already active, the app treats the shop as eligible even when the plan name looks lower. Hide, rename, and reorder run on more plans. Advanced is not required for that alone. Eligible shops see the full checklist. Blocked shops see a plan banner and a delivery-focused checklist.

That article is not Shopify’s page about connecting a UPS or FedEx account. Shopify Help puts third-party carrier-calculated shipping on Advanced and Plus. Grow can add it with a monthly fee or with annual billing. Basic and Starter cannot. A Grow annual plan is not an automatic pass for this app. The exception in the OO docs is a carrier that is already active.

Intuitive Shipping and Advanced Shipping Rules also advertise carrier-based rates. Their listings do not waive the Shopify plan rule. Do not score them as “works on every plan.”

Three public cards

OO ‑ Shipping Rates & Rules is free. No paid tier. No Built for Shopify badge. 0 reviews. Launched 28 October 2026. Language: English. Works with Checkout.

The description: a visual flow, or you describe the logic and AI drafts it; prices fixed, in tiers, or per unit, with threshold discounts, minimums, and handling fees; 40+ conditions (postcode, weight, dimensions, products, customers, date); several rates merged into one checkout line; hide, rename, and reorder; logs that show why a rate appeared. Categories also include carrier-based, dimensional, distance, rate blending, multi-zone, and multi-origin. UPS, USPS, and FedEx are not in “works with.”

Rate pricing lists fixed, cart total, weight, quantity, volume, and dimensional weight. Volume and dimensional weight need length, width, and height, plus a divisor. The listing promises logs. The documented window is the last 7 days of carrier requests, not a year of history.

Intuitive Shipping’s fetched page did not show a Built for Shopify badge. Rating 5.0 from 496 (485 fives, 6 fours, 1 three, 2 twos, 2 ones). Launched 15 November 2017. Works with Checkout, Australia Post, Canada Post, UPS, USPS, ShipStation, and “other major carriers.”

| Plan | Price | Orders | |------|-------|--------| | Sandbox | $0 | Set up and test, then enable rates. Guided onboarding | | Growth | $70 / month, 15-day live trial | 500 orders, all features | | Business | $150 / month | 2,000 orders, all features | | Professional | $300 / month | 5,000 orders, all features |

The hero names 40+ conditions, custom names, a description under the shipping option, and SmartBoxing for dimensional rates. Hide and rename are in the category list. Reorder is not a separate category. An AI flow is not mentioned. Every paid card says “all features.” You pay for volume, not for a hidden hide button.

Advanced Shipping Rules (Bambri) showed no badge on the fetched page, rated 4.8 from 321 (299 fives, 7 fours, 2 threes, 5 twos, 8 ones). Launched 3 February 2016. Works with Checkout, Shopify Admin, Gooten, Printful, and Printify. Phone and email support are on the listing.

| Plan | Price | Limit printed on the card | |------|-------|---------------------------| | Lite | $9 / month | 2 product groups, 1 blended rate, no hide/show | | Standard | $29 / month | 5 product groups, 2 blended rates | | Pro | $59 / month | 20 product groups, 3 blended rates, postal subzones, customer tags | | Unlimited | $99 / month | Unlimited groups and blended rates, all features |

The hero covers conditional logic, carrier rates, titles, combined rates, and area restrictions. Customer tags are not on Lite or Standard. Hide/show is explicitly absent on Lite.

The weighted total

| Criterion | Weight | OO | Intuitive | Adv. Shipping Rules | |-----------|--------|----|-----------|---------------------| | Functionality (conditions, combine, hide/reorder) | 25% | 4.5 | 4.5 | 4.0 | | Integrations (named carriers, print apps) | 15% | 3.0 | 5.0 | 3.5 | | Reliability (age, badge, docs) | 15% | 3.0 | 4.5 | 4.0 | | Reviews | 10% | 1.0 | 5.0 | 4.5 | | Ease of use | 10% | 4.0 | 3.5 | 3.5 | | Price-to-value | 10% | 5.0 | 2.5 | 3.5 | | Scale | 10% | 3.5 | 4.5 | 4.0 | | Support | 5% | 2.5 | 5.0 | 4.5 | | Weighted total | 100% | 3.50 | 4.35 | 3.90 |

Intuitive wins: 4.35, then 3.90, then 3.50. The reason is not a buried feature. It is 496 reviews at 5.0, named carriers (UPS, USPS, Canada Post, Australia Post), and support that recent reviews name. OO wins only price-to-value: free, no order cap on the listing, with an AI draft, reorder, and logs. That 5.0 on price is a 10% weight. Reviews are also 10%, and OO scores 1.0 because there are zero reviews. That is not a bad reputation. It is no reputation.

Advanced Shipping Rules is close on functionality and cheaper than Intuitive if you can stay under $59–$99. Lite at $9 fails as soon as hide/show is a must-have. The card says so, with an asterisk.

OO’s 4.5 on functionality ties Intuitive. It does not beat it. Both say 40+ conditions. Intuitive documents SmartBoxing and descriptions under the method. OO documents a visual flow, an AI draft you review before save, reorder, and logs. Leaving either fact out would fake the total.

When a shipping profile is enough

Profiles cover a rate per country or region, by weight or order value, plus a free-shipping threshold. Shopify Help covers live rates from your own UPS or FedEx account, on the plans above. You do not need these three apps for that.

An app starts at an exception a profile cannot express: a postcode, a product tag, dimensional weight from metafields, two components collapsed into one line, or a method you need to hide. Without an eligible carrier, OO shows a plan banner instead of a price.

Reviews

OO: zero. Not 5.0. Not “no complaints yet.” Empty. Launched 28 October 2026.

Intuitive: 5.0 from 496, with two one-star and two two-star ratings. Recent cards on 15 October, 25 September, and 23 September 2026 are positive, and the developer replies. The 23 September review mentions a learning curve, then rules by tag and collection, plus Loom videos from support. That curve is why ease of use is 3.5, not 5.

Advanced Shipping Rules: 4.8 from 321, eight of them one star. The recent reviews on the page (30 July, 21 July, and 1 September 2026) praise support, including a setup session of about 45 minutes. The text of the eight one-star reviews was not in those three cards.

What the weights actually pick

On these weights, Intuitive wins at 4.35. Pick OO when the budget is $0, you want a visual flow or an AI draft, hide/rename/reorder and a log are enough, you are not looking for a named UPS connection inside the app, and you will accept an app with no reviews — and the shop is allowed to run the carrier. Pick Advanced Shipping Rules when you want phone support and a lower entry than $70, and then read the Lite card: no hide/show for $9.

The call to action for that free, still unreviewed path is only this listing: OO ‑ Shipping Rates & Rules. Do not say carrier prices work on Basic.
