Three thousand profiles. Locale blank after the import. You are on Customers. More actions will add tags. It will not set language to `de`. Opening each profile is not a workflow. The spreadsheet is already in admin — if anyone knows the door.
Shopify open bulk editor from customers is that door: Start editing on the app dashboard, or Customers → More actions → Edit in bulk. Then you filter empty locale or tax exempt. Until someone clicks it, the app is just another icon.
Docs list both paths. Saving in batches was the previous article. This one is how staff even reach the grid — and why a restricted role quietly drops segments.
Shopify’s customer list is search plus a profile. Bulk tags on the visible selection: yes. A Locale dropdown across the whole file: no. Tax exempt in one apply: no.
Shopify Help on customers stays per profile. CSV export/import is another lap, with the usual holes on locale and tax exemption — the two fields this listing calls out.
Native: tags on the rows you see now. Not native: a table inside admin with filters over every customer.
Hunt under Apps by name. New staff miss “Bulk Customer Editor” among twenty apps. They export, edit in Excel, re-import. Locale stays empty.
Open Customers and hope. Edit in bulk appears only if the app is installed and the user has `read_customers` and `write_customers`. Missing scopes: no table, or a table without segments.
Ping an Owner to “do locale.” Queue. Everyone else stays one-by-one.
Two documented entries beat all three habits.
OO - Bulk Customer Data Editor is Free. Listing 0.0 (0 reviews). English UI. Excel / Google Sheets via CSV. Hero work is still Customer Locale and tax-exemption status in bulk, plus fields Shopify’s default editor barely bulk-edits.
What is Bulk Customer Editor?: admin embed. Table for name, email, phone, tags, note, locale, tax exempt, default address, marketing consent, metafields defined on the shop. Filters, views, CSV, segments. And: Open the editor quickly from Customers → More actions → Edit in bulk.
Open Bulk Customer Editor.
Dashboard → Start editing.
Or the app nav: Customers.
Admin → Customers.
More actions.
Edit in bulk.
Same spreadsheet. Pick the path the team will remember. Put it in onboarding.
The app needs read_customers and write_customers. Staff with tight customer permissions may not load segments or rows. That is Shopify hiding data, not a broken grid. Owner (or a role with those scopes) can. Protected customer data: editing stays limited until access is approved.
Select-all matching up to 50,000. Large saves in batches; keep the tab open. Empty CSV cells do not clear existing values.
2,400 DE accounts, locale blank, mail in English. Purchasing can view customers, not segments.
Install OO - Bulk Customer Data Editor. Confirm `read_customers` / `write_customers`.
Purchasing: Customers → More actions. No Edit in bulk → permissions, not “the app vanished.”
Owner or support role: Edit in bulk. Locale column on. Filter empty. Bulk apply `de`. Save, tab open, wait for batches.
Same door tomorrow for tax exempt on wholesale tags.
Optional shop-wide view “locale empty” so purchasing sees it once the role is right.
Do not test only as Owner. The person who ran the import has to find the action.
Once inside: Locale and tax exempt columns first, then tags. Filters run across the customer file, not just the current index page. Bulk apply on the selection; select-all matching up to 50,000. Views are shop-wide — useful when purchasing later gets the right role. Creating segments from filters is allowed; without Shopify segment permissions that control stays useless even if Edit in bulk shows.
CSV import/export is a different door on the dashboard. This article is the admin table. Skipping the editor does not fix locale with another export.
Metafields that exist on the shop can appear as columns once you are in. Unsupported types may be read-only. Total spent, order count, and created date are filter/sort only — that is a later topic. Opening the editor does not make those cells writable.
If Shopify blocks protected customer data, you will open a thinner sheet until access is approved. Tell staff that “Edit in bulk is empty” is often a permission screen, not a missing install.
Listing — Free. No paid tier to invent.
Install. Check scopes.
Once via Start editing, once via Customers → More actions → Edit in bulk.
Pin open from Customers internally. No write_customers → fix the role, skip the CSV detour.
First real job: locale or tax exempt — the listing USPs — not every column enabled.
It is not a second Shopify. It is the sheet inside this one.
Shopify open bulk editor from customers is two clicks into one table. Dashboard or More actions. Without `read_customers` and `write_customers` you stay on the index. Locale and tax exempt change in bulk after that, not profile by profile.
Leave Edit in bulk where staff already work, via OO - Bulk Customer Data Editor. The import landed. The language can follow.
