Duplicate or export a Shopify price calculator (JSON)

The blinds calculator is live. Width, height, surcharge checkbox, formula checked on a real checkout. Cut-to-size panels need the same fields with a different lookup. Rebuilding from the 5-step wizard is a wasted afternoon. Editing the live row in place is how the blinds shop pays panel prices for a week.

Shopify duplicate and export price calculator is the list action in Calculator Builder inside Options Price Calculator. Duplicate clones the row. Export writes JSON before you touch the formula. Neither one adds a Shopify option. Adding variants is still 3 options and 2048 variants. A second calculator is not option four.

Live listing (USD): Free $0 (20 uses; always free on Develop). Starter $9.99. Premium $19.99 (conditional logic, Font Picker, live preview, lookup tables & file uploads). Extra plan $39.99 (conditional fields, draft-order checkout, admin calculator, setup). Built for Shopify, 5.0 from 27 reviews.

Yesterday: swap the product image from an option. This piece is copying the calculator itself.

Shopify does not version your formula

Calculator Builder lists every calculator on the shop. Linking Products & Variants assigns per variant. One calculator per variant at a time. Default Title products get a single link. Fabric SKUs can point at different calculators.

There is no native “formula history” on the product. Change `product_price + (width * height)` and the previous line is gone unless you exported. Screenshots in Slack drop a parenthesis. JSON from Export includes form fields, design, formula, translations, and related config.

Variants still matter for inventory. A 90×130 SKU is a variant. Every millimetre as a SKU is not — that input belongs on the calculator.

Three ways shops lose the working row

Edit the production calculator “just to try panels.” Blinds checkout breaks. You needed a clone, not courage.

Assign the same calculator to a second product line. Fine while logic matches. Bulk linking writes one calculator onto every visible variant and overwrites what was there. The moment panels need another table, duplicate first.

Hit Duplicate on Free after the first calculator exists. Docs: Free keeps 1 editable calculator. Create, duplicate, and import are blocked until you upgrade or delete the existing one. Starter / Premium: unlimited. Deleting the live calculator to import a JSON you never downloaded is a hole, not a plan.

Create new still opens fields → preview → design → formula → settings. Generate with AI drafts from a description (Free: one trial use shared across AI features; Starter+: unlimited, rate-limited). Duplicate wins when 80% already works.

Duplicate vs Export vs Import

Duplicate clones fields, design, formula, and settings into a new row. Rename it. Point the new row at the panel variants. The blinds calculator stays put.

Export downloads JSON from the builder (or list actions when shown). Treat it as version history before a large edit. Date the filename yourself. It is a file, not a live sync to another shop.

Import uploads that JSON and creates a calculator. Blocked on Free once the single slot is full. After import:

  1. Read field keys and formulas. Keys become variables. `width` misspelled breaks the math.

  2. Re-check Product preview images if the export referenced media. Those URLs belonged to the source shop.

  3. Link variants again. Import does not restore assignments.

Server-side price validation stays on. JSON is configuration. It is not a client-side price override.

A blinds shop that adds panels without touching checkout

Calculator `blinds-m2` is linked to every blinds variant. Formula uses width × height plus a material checkbox. Export that row. Duplicate it to `panels-m2`. Change only the copy — lookup table or surcharge. Lookup tables and conditional pricing are Premium; say so.

Link `panels-m2` to panel variants. Test one variant before bulk linking a collection. Filters hide rows; bulk change only touches what you see.

Second shop, same brand: export here, import there, then the three-step checklist. Preview media will not follow automatically.

Theme app extension still has to sit on the product template. Duplicating settings does not install the block on a new theme.

What the JSON actually holds — and what it does not

Export is a backup of that calculator: fields, design, formula, translations, related config. It is not a shop clone. Theme app extension placement, app embed, and selector picker bindings live on the theme. Duplicate/import will not flip those on a new store.

After a large catalog change, refresh product data so new variants appear in the link list. Then assign the duplicated calculator. Filters (vendor, tag, collection, variant id) narrow bulk linking. Hidden rows stay untouched — confirm the filter before you bulk-change.

Multilingual calculator UI strings (Starter+) sit in the calculator translations. They travel with Export. Review them after Import on a shop with different published languages. Tokens like `{min}` should stay tokens.

Premium lookup tables can live in the formula step (up to 50 tables, 50×50). Duplicating the calculator duplicates those tables with it. CSV import/export of a lookup grid is a different file from the calculator JSON. Do not mix the two.

Put it on a row today

  1. Open Options Price Calculator → Calculator Builder.

  2. On Free with a calculator already there: upgrade, or skip duplicate/import.

  3. Before a risky formula edit: Export.

  4. For a sibling product line: Duplicate, rename, link variants.

  5. For another store: Export → Import → keys, previews, variant links.

  6. Buy as a customer, not only the builder preview.

Wrap-up

Shopify duplicate and export price calculator clones a row or snapshots JSON. Shopify will not do that for you. Free: one editable calculator. Starter and Premium: unlimited. After import, re-link variants. Three options / 2048 variants stay the catalog cap. Get the working blinds calculator onto disk, then clone panels. App: Options Price Calculator.
