Your catalogue is net. The product page shows €8.20 excluding VAT. A buyer in another EU country passes VIES. Checkout should add tax dynamically — or drop it — using Shopify’s own rules. Someone enables Use draft order logic in Tax Exempt because the docs call it “reliable”. Totals then stop matching a net shop. The query is Shopify draft order with VAT exclusive prices. The supported answer is: do not combine them.
Draft Order Logic (Important Restrictions) is blunt. If you sell excluding VAT, you must use Standard Checkout Logic. Draft Order Logic is not supported for that setup. OO - EU B2B & Wholesale ships both modes. The wrong toggle is a broken checkout, not an upgrade.
We already covered incl. / excl. labels on the product page. That is Tax display. This article is the checkout mode after VIES.
On net prices Shopify expects to calculate VAT during checkout, from customer and market. A draft order finalises line prices before the invoice URL. Shopify does not re-apply tax the same way. Docs: wrong totals or missing tax behaviour. Standard is the only supported path for exclusive pricing.
Step 3 – Choose Your Checkout Logic:
| Store setup | Mode | |-------------|------| | Prices excluding VAT | Standard Checkout Logic | | Prices including VAT | Draft Order Logic (recommended) | | Several Markets / fixed market prices | Draft Order Logic | | Single EU market, simple | Standard | | Play nicely with other apps | Standard |
The exclusive-VAT row cannot be overridden.
Toggle: Apps → B2B & Wholesale → Tax & prices → Tax Exempt → General Settings → Use draft order logic. Off = Standard. On = Draft. It applies immediately.
Do not turn Draft Order Logic on if the shop already uses B2B draft checkout for custom, volume, or bulk prices. Step 3: those two draft flows are not merged yet.
Listing (2 Nov 2026): Built for Shopify, 5.0 from 34 reviews. Free — one custom pricing rule, one registration form. Starter $22/mo or $220/year: unlimited custom + volume, EU tax exemption (VIES + logs), tax display, login to see prices. Growth $37/mo or $370/year: bulk forms, draft checkout, repeat orders, quotes. 14-day trial on Starter/Growth. USD. Tax Exempt is Starter, not Free.
Always-on Draft “because it is stronger”. For gross prices that is often true: after VIES the app builds a draft with the cart, VAT stripped where it should be, email, VAT number, company address from VIES when present, tax-exempt status, then sends the buyer to the invoice URL. On net prices, that freeze is the bug.
Markets set to “Show as included” while you sell net. Step 4: Draft on → Show as included. Standard (Draft off) → Dynamic pricing. B2B-only net shops: Draft off + Dynamic pricing. Mix the app toggle with the wrong market display and VIES can succeed while checkout still looks taxed.
Treating the incl./excl. label as checkout logic. Tax display on Starter is copy next to the price. It does not remove VAT at the gate.
Bundles plus Draft. The tax FAQ: Standard usually cooperates better with bundle apps. Draft can fight late cart transforms. Another reason to stay on Standard when prices are net.
Buyer enters email and VAT number.
After VIES: customer marked tax exempt; VAT data in cart attributes and order notes.
Native Shopify checkout. Tax rules apply dynamically. The app does not rewrite checkout prices.
The order shows the exemption; notes keep the VAT payload.
Draft (only when you sell including VAT): draft after validation, invoice redirect, auto-update if the cart changes. Strengths: fixed market prices, several Markets, an audit trail. Limits: not for exclusive VAT, a different checkout, possible clashes with cart apps.
VIES itself does not change with the toggle. The checkout email must match the email used at validation. A mismatch is a FAQ item, not a reason to force Draft on a net shop.
“Net & Nail” shows exclusive prices only. One primary EU market. No per-country custom prices.
Starter, so Tax Exempt is on. Install OO - EU B2B & Wholesale.
Tax Exempt → General Settings → Use draft order logic off.
Markets → EU → Taxes and duties → Tax display Dynamic pricing.
Optional: app Tax display so the PDP reads “excl. VAT”. Separate module.
Test customer, valid VAT number, same email at checkout. VIES green. Checkout should follow your Shopify tax rules (0% on a qualifying intra-EU B2B order). No draft invoice URL.
Tax Exempt logs: validation ok. Order notes: number + exemption.
If 21% is still there, look at Markets, a fixed country price, or a different email. Turning Draft on is not the documented fix for exclusive catalogues.
Gross retail and net B2B in one product list, without market splits, is how totals become unreadable. Pick one logic per price model.
Shopify draft order with VAT exclusive prices is an invalid pair. Net → Standard Checkout Logic, Dynamic pricing, VIES on native checkout. Draft Order Logic is for gross prices, several Markets, and fixed market prices.
Leave the toggle off, run one VIES order, and start from the listing — not a second draft pipeline stacked on net prices.
