Bulk-edit Shopify customers: Save, Discard, and the preview in between

You set locale to `nl` on 400 rows and tax exempt on the wholesale tag. You close the tab. Next morning the profiles are unchanged — or worse, you assumed it had written, a colleague opens Customers, and half the file has the new locale.

Shopify customer editor save or discard is the Shopify save bar on the spreadsheet in OO - Bulk Customer Data Editor. Quick start: a changed cell stays marked until you save. Top of the screen: Save or Discard. Save opens a preview, then you confirm. Large saves show progress — keep the tab open.

Listing: Free. Admin spreadsheet. Bulk-edit Customer Locale and tax-exemption status, fields Shopify’s default editor does not handle well in bulk. 0 reviews, launched 15 September 2026. Do not invent ratings. Do not pitch another OO app here.

On 22 October we wrote about saving large jobs in batches. That is after you confirm. This is the gate before Shopify stores anything.

Shopify has not been called yet

Edit customers in the spreadsheet: click a cell, change it, keep going. Ready? Save bar → Save. Abort the session? Discard all unsaved changes. Docs repeat: changes are permanent if you save.

Only changed fields are sent. Locale dropdowns (`nl`, `en`, …) and tax exempt behave like name or tags: staged in the grid, real after Save.

Apply a value to many customers: bulk apply stages first. Select-all matching up to 50,000. The table shows the staged value. Same save bar, same preview. Nothing hits Shopify between “Apply to selected” and “Save”.

Large saves run in batches. FAQ: closing the tab can interrupt the job. Partial failure: Shopify’s error in a toast, fix those rows, retry the rest. That is not Discard. Discard means “I do not want this session”.

How the save bar surprises people

Closing the browser tab because the cells look “done”. Marking is not a Shopify write.

Opening Customers in another tab too early, seeing old values, then Discard because “it failed”.

Native CSV round-trip with no preview. This editor previews on Save and on import. Empty CSV cells do not clear values on update. Skipping preview on 8,000 rows is how you write the wrong locale everywhere — the confirm step exists to stop that.

Opening 1,200 profiles one by one. The listing exists because locale and tax exempt are painful that way. Open from Customers: More actions → Edit in bulk.

What you can stage in one sitting

Editable (docs): first/last name, email, phone, tags, note, locale, tax exempt; marketing consent (email, SMS, WhatsApp — Shopify rules; subscribed needs a valid opt-in); default address; customer metafields defined on the shop. Read-only: total spent, order count, created date, and similar.

Filter empty or wrong locale first, or tax exempt = false on wholesale tags. Bulk apply. Look at the grid. Then Save → preview → confirm. That is the quick start order.

Views and segments shrink the set. Select-all matching combines search, segment, and filters. Stay under 50,000 or narrow. Preview is still required at that size.

If Shopify blocks protected customer data, editing stays limited until access is approved. Save will not bypass that.

Walkthrough: 1,200 locales after a CSV migration

Store “Northlight”. Customers from an old shop. Locale blank or `en` while mail should be Dutch. Tax exempt still off on 80 wholesale accounts.

  1. Install the listing (Free). Customers → More actions → Edit in bulk.

  2. Filter locale empty (or `en`). Show the Locale column.

  3. Select all matching. Bulk apply Locale = Dutch (`nl`). Cells mark. Do not close the tab.

  4. Second pass: tag `wholesale`, tax exempt off. Bulk apply tax exempt on. Marks again.

  5. Save bar → Save. Read the preview (count, fields). Confirm. Watch progress, tab stays open.

  6. Toast on a row? Fix that email or opt-in, retry the rest. Discard only if preview shows the wrong set.

Then open one profile in Shopify Customers. Locale `nl`. Tax exempt as expected. That is the review step in the quick start.

Two different “saves” confuse staff. Apply to selected only paints the grid. Save calls Shopify. Between them you can still change filters, hide a column, or Discard. After Save the customer record is the source of truth. A second Discard “just to double-check” will not roll those rows back.

Marketing consent in the same session: you cannot flip people to subscribed without a valid opt-in. Shopify rejects it; the toast is the API, not the grid misbehaving. Fix consent or leave that column alone. Locale and tax exempt do not have that extra rule — which is why the listing leads with them.

Saved views: store “locale empty” as a shop-wide view so the next teammate opens the same set. The save bar does not change. A view is not an auto-save.

Get it live

  1. Open OO - Bulk Customer Data Editor.

  2. Filter the real mess (locale, tax exempt), not “everyone”.

  3. Edit cells or bulk apply. Marks mean not in Shopify yet.

  4. Save → preview → confirm. Discard if the selection was wrong.

  5. Large set: leave the tab open until progress finishes. Spot-check a profile.

The save bar is the same Shopify bar you see elsewhere. Here it guards 400 locales at once.

Wrap-up

Shopify customer editor save or discard is staged work: marked cells, preview on Save, Discard drops the session, then permanent writes. Large jobs batch; keep the tab. Locale and tax exempt belong in that flow, not in 1,200 single profiles.

Save from the listing. Do not close the tab between marks and confirm.
