Shopify 3 options 2048 variants limit checklist: when native variants still pass, and when Options Price Calculator survives the filter.
2026-11-01

The 3-option and 2,048-variant checklist

Ask “which Shopify app adds a fourth product choice?” and the useful answer starts with a pass/fail list, not a brand. This is that list for Options Price Calculator. A sign shop pricing aluminium bar by the centimetre, or a plaque sold by thickness plus a finish, fails native variants for a mechanical reason. A hoodie in three sizes and four colours does not.

Formula examples and m² pricing are covered in the earlier use-case note. What follows is only the knockout.

Must-haves

Miss one row and reviews cannot save the candidate.

| Must-have | Fails when | |-----------|------------| | The cap you quote is 3 options and 2,048 variants | Copy still says the old 100-variant ceiling | | Extra choices do not become new variants | Every millimetre is a SKU | | The product-page price moves with the input | The order only stores a note | | Line item properties are not treated as a pricing API | A `properties[...]` input is sold as “the price updates” | | The formula uses `+ − × ÷` and parentheses and returns a number | The only tool is a flat add-on per dropdown | | Price acceptance happens off the browser | The cart trusts whatever the page posted | | Install path is a theme app extension | The plan is “paste a script into the theme” | | The plan’s usage cap matches a live catalogue | Free stops at 20 uses |

Conditional formulas, lookup tables, file upload, live preview, and show/hide fields are real, and they are not on every tier. Price them as knockouts of their own, below.

The numbers Shopify publishes

Checked on 1 November 2026, Shopify Help — Adding variants:

  • Up to three options on a product. One product can be size, colour, and style. Another can be weight, finish, and material.

  • Up to 2,048 variants on that product.

  • Past either limit, Help points merchants to an App Store app, or to theme code that collects line item properties.

  • Past 100 variants, practical limits show up. A product holds 250 media items. Some themes, public apps, sales channels, Stocky, and the legacy Order Printer stop there. Custom apps still on the REST Admin API can stop there too. Plus stores skip the daily 10,000-variant upload cap that hits everyone else at 500,000 storewide variants; that cap is not the per-product ceiling.

Do not write “100 variants max”. Do not write “unlimited Shopify variants”. Calculator fields are not variants and they do not hold inventory.

Properties store text

A line item property can record “width: 186 cm” or “engraving: Alvarez”. It does not change the unit price. If the price stays put and the workshop only needs the note, native passes. If the price is width times height times a rate, properties fail on purpose.

On Shopify Plus, Combined Listings can stack separate products into one listing, with up to three more options on top of each product’s own options. That is still a SKU assembly, not a formula.

Products that should stay on variants

Keep native variants when all of these are true:

  • combinations are discrete and you want stock per combination

  • each variant has a fixed price

  • you are inside 3 options and comfortably inside 2,048 variants

  • nothing continuous, uploaded, or conditional needs to move the price

A calculator is overhead there. Inventory stays clearer without it.

Situation matrix

| Situation | Native variants | Options Price Calculator | |-----------|-----------------|--------------------------| | S/M/L × colour, stock per SKU | Pass | Skip it | | A fourth choice that is not a stock-keeping unit (hem, lining, zoom) | Fail — there is no fourth option | Pass, as an app field beside the real variants | | A price for every centimetre | Fail — you burn the 2,048 cap | Pass, formula on dimension fields | | A note only, price unchanged | Properties are enough | Only if the price must move | | Stock per millimetre | Impossible | Also impossible — this is pricing, not a SKU replacement | | More than 100 variants on an older theme | Theme or another app may choke | The calculator does not add variants; your SKUs stay SKUs |

Assignment is per variant. One variant on the product means the link covers the product. Switching variants switches the calculator. One calculator per variant. Source: linking products and variants.

What the listing and docs actually commit to

On 1 November 2026 the listing carries Built for Shopify and describes unlimited product options with formula pricing, without extra variants. The formula builder accepts addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and parentheses. The result has to be numeric. Conditional if/then formulas and lookup tables are Premium, not Starter.

The storefront block is a theme app extension. Add it on the product template from the theme editor, ideally under the price and above Add to cart (extension guide). Themes differ. A selector picker exists for the price and the add-to-cart button because of that. “Works on every theme with zero setup” is not in the docs.

The listing bullet “secure server-side price validation” matches a setting, not a silent default. The safety article says the toggle ships off until someone opens theme settings in the app and saves it. Off: the cart bundle trusts `__ooCustomPrice`. On: a server signature and payload hash must match, or the line is not expanded into the order. If “shoppers cannot edit the price in the browser” is a must-have, an install with the toggle off fails it. The control exists. It is not on until you turn it on.

Plan gates

USD, listing checked 1 November 2026:

| Plan | Price | What it decides | |------|-------|-----------------| | Free | $0 | 20 uses. A live made-to-measure catalogue fails here | | Starter | $9.99/month | Unlimited options, AI generation, formula builder, metafields, styling, multilingual | | $19.99/month | The tier the $39.99 plan calls Premium (“Everything in Premium”) | Conditional pricing, font picker, live preview, price breakdown, lookup tables and file uploads | | $39.99/month | On top of that Premium tier | Show/hide fields, draft-order checkout, admin calculator, setup service |

“Show this field only when engraving is on” is a $39.99 knockout, not a Starter feature. A 2D price matrix via lookup is $19.99. Do not score a cheaper tier as if those boxes were ticked.

Reviews, counted not invented

Listing on 1 November 2026: 5.0 from 29 reviews, 100% five stars, zero on four through one. Recent notes (30, 29, and 23 October 2026) talk about custom goods — letter height, thickness, colour, countertops — and about fast support. There is no negative review on the listing to weigh, and no developer reply to a complaint that is not there. Recheck before you cite the count.

If the product is three options, a fixed price, and stock per SKU, stay native. If a fourth choice, a continuous measure, or a formula will not fit in a variant, properties only annotate the line and 2,048 is not a licence to mint a SKU per cell. Options Price Calculator covers that gap with app fields and a formula: Starter for the base, a higher tier when conditions, lookups, or uploads are must-haves. Turn server-side validation on when the price has to be enforced.
