OPC vs SE Option Price Calculator

Read the plan cards before the hero. On 5 November 2026, SE: Option Price Calculator puts Option Formulas and Option Set Formula on the $29.99 card. Basic, at $14.99, lists pricing tables, dimension-based pricing, swatches, styling, and a product-image change. It does not list a formula. Options Price Calculator puts the advanced formula builder and metafield data on Starter at $9.99.

That is the decision if the product is made to measure. Width times height times a rate, one product page, no variant per centimetre. Both apps carry Built for Shopify. The badge is a tie. The invoice is not.

Shopify still allows three options and 2,048 variants on a product. The ceiling is 2,048, not 100. A fourth axis is not a variant. A line item property can store the measurement as text. It does not change the unit price. Past that point you are choosing an app, and the app’s cheapest card is often the wrong card.

Must-haves

Miss one of these and neither rating saves the install.

  • The price is a number from a formula, with addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and parentheses. A fixed upcharge per dropdown is a different product.

  • The formula is on the plan you will actually pay. “Pricing tables” on a cheaper card is not a formula builder.

  • Any product or variant metafield the formula reads is on that same plan, not two tiers up.

  • The extra fields are not inventory. A calculator does not create a SKU per millimetre.

  • The calculator is a theme app block on the product template. A script tag is the wrong mount. Shopify stopped letting apps create or update script tags on 1 October 2026, and storefront script tags stop on 1 March 2027.

  • If a handy customer must not rewrite the price in the browser, the app has to document a server-side check. A listing sentence with no switch in the docs is not that check.

  • The plan covers volume. OPC Free stops at 20 uses.

What each card actually sells

Figures below are USD, billed every 30 days, from the two listings on 5 November 2026. SE’s $14.99 card is labeled Basic. The $59.99 card says “Pro Plan +”, so the $29.99 card is the step they call Pro. Free offers “All Ultra Features” for 14 days. Quote the prices. The nicknames are easier to mix up than the amounts.

For “a formula, metafields in the sum, no extra variants”, OPC is the install. The two things the formula needs are on a $9.99 card. SE starts the formula at $29.99 and the metadata variable at $59.99. Install from the Options Price Calculator listing once that is the gap you care about.

Where SE’s listing is the stronger one

SE has been in the App Store since 27 May 2022 and has 53 reviews to OPC’s 29. If years in market outweigh a perfect score on a younger app, that point is theirs. Seven of those 53 reviews are one star. The three newest cards are positive. The low scores are older. They are about support, plan surprises, and paid templates. They are on the public page.

The matrix is the list. SE wins the rows for a pricing table at $14.99, quantity or weight from a formula, custom CSS and HTML, popup upsell, slide-out cart, show/hide at $29.99, and a develop plan that stays free. Conditional pricing stays cheaper on OPC.

Both badges are real. Built for Shopify covers theme app extensions, an uninstall that removes the app’s blocks, and a performance bar. Neither listing publishes a Lighthouse delta. Do not invent one.

When variants are still the right model

Stay in the admin when the buyer picks from a fixed list, you want stock per combination, and you can live inside three options and well under 2,048 variants. Three sizes and four colours do not need a calculator. Engraving that does not change the price can stay a property. The admin loses on width times height times a rate, or on a fourth choice that is not a SKU. 2,048 is more combinations of those three options, not a fourth option and not a variant per millimetre.

What OPC’s docs pin down

The formula page shows `(product_price + width * height) * material_multiplier`. The result has to be numeric. The field selector inserts fields, custom variables, lookup chips, product and variant metafields, and rounding or math helpers. Lookup tables and conditional if/then formulas are marked Premium on that same page. A Starter formula is not a lookup.

Placement is a theme app extension: product template, Add block, Apps, Options Price Calculator, under the price and above Add to cart. The docs do not say every theme works with zero setup.

The server-side switch stays off until someone saves it. Off, the cart trusts `__ooCustomPrice`. On, the bundle function checks `__ooLiteSig` and `__ooPayloadHash` and refuses a line whose price was edited. SE’s listing, as fetched, does not mention an equivalent check. That is a documentation gap, not a proof that their cart is unsigned. Calculators attach per variant (linking article). The tabs are Free, Starter ($9.99), Premium ($19.99), and Ultimate ($39.99). Free stays at 20 uses.

Reviews, including the ones that hurt

OPC on 5 November 2026 is 5.0 from 29 reviews, every one of them five stars. The three newest cards are Orange Shapes (30 October, Netherlands), Brooklyn Butcher Blocks (29 October, United States), and Kingdom Decals (23 October, United Kingdom). No developer reply, and no low score to answer. Twenty-nine reviews is a shorter record than fifty-three.

SE the same day is 4.6 from 53: 44 fives, one four, one three, zero twos, seven ones. The three newest cards are positive: Coyote Color Custom Stickers (20 October), The Mill Shop (14 September), and Skate Anytime (31 August). No reply is required on a compliment.

Four one-star cards name the store:

  • 6 April 2025, Rogue Transfers, Canada. They describe the app as developer work. Support, in their words, said grade-9 math was enough for a lookup formula, and the docs did not answer them. No reply in the text we fetched.

  • 20 August 2024, Automotive Supplies, United Kingdom. Support pointed at docs and then went quiet in the same chat. No reply visible.

  • 9 December 2023, The Decal Dealer, Canada. Basic looked sufficient, then the app seemed to want a much higher plan. Strategic Edge replied on 17 December 2023 that the feature was not on the plan the merchant wanted to pay for, and that not every feature is on every plan. The reply starts at the pricing table.

  • 23 July 2023, Teeone, United Kingdom. Templates priced in the hundreds, on top of the subscription. Strategic Edge replied on 26 July 2023, apologised, and said they had reached out before the review.

Those replies belong in the score. SE answered two of these older one-star reviews. Two later ones in this set show no answer. The “Basic will not do it” complaint matches the cards as they stand in 2026: formulas are not on $14.99. That is a reason to read the card, not a reason to pretend the app cannot calculate. The same standard applies to OPC. Show and hide is not on Starter. The server-side check is off until you save it.

The call

If the job is a formula price, metafields inside that formula, and a documented theme block, the $9.99 card on Options Price Calculator is the one that contains the work. SE is the better public listing when you need quantity or weight from a formula, custom HTML or CSS, a pricing table on $14.99 without a formula builder, or a develop plan that stays free. Their record since 2022 and their 53 reviews count. So do the seven one-star reviews. Both Built for Shopify badges count, and they cancel out. The formula that starts at $9.99, against a formula that starts at $29.99 and a metafield that starts at $59.99, is the gap this comparison is about.
